Dance! It is as simple as that – move your body in some way.
Dancing is free! You don’t have to pay to dance or even have to have music. You can even dance in your pyjamas or with no clothes on in the privacy of your own home (or maybe not in my case!).
What am I hearing?
Don’t let me hear – I can’t dance/no rhythm/it’s only when you’re young/people will judge me/don’t want to make a fool of myself … (you can fill in your own ones)
This is you allowing yourself to move – however you want to move with the music or not. You are giving permission to yourself. This is the freedom you have.
The Don’ts
You don’t even have to have lessons (unless you particularly want to). You don’t have to be young, talented, be dressed appropriately or even have a great body.
It’s about you allowing yourself the freedom to ‘BE’ – Yes, being-ness does not always have to be sitting still and meditating.
Don’t let yourself be cool and calculating – simply let go and allow your enthusiasm for movement. Allow your exuberance out and if you get it wrong (who says?) then laugh with yourself because when you do this there is no judgement, and you can keep laughing as it frees you up to even dance wildly – free as a bird.
Your dance can be whatever you want it to be and it can be with others too of course. There is something so liberating when you are with others, doing your own thing and yet you are part of something bigger too.
What’s important is that you bring dance (even if it’s just a movement of the body when you get up from the computer) into your life.
Why do it?
It is an expression of YOU. It gives you JOY.
It’s the best medicine you can give yourself when you’re feeling down or stuck or your body is feeling tight or simply to express the joy that’s in you.
Don’t allow yourself to be old before your time! Some can even forget how to be joyful as it has been unexpressed for so long.
It’s never too late to re-connect with your passion! You will not only feel better – you will look better too! That smile inside will show on the outside and your happiness will be contagious.

Hi Irene 🙂
I couldn’t agree more. In zumba, I have found an exercise that I look forward to every time I get to go. It’s such fun and, like other forms of exercise, releases endorphins (feel-good hormones) while you take part, and after.
You can do it at a level which suits you and it doesn’t matter if you get some steps wrong (or all of them!)
I feel so grateful to have discovered this form of dance and to have made some lovely friends through attending classes too 🙂

I totally agree. One of my favourite songs is I Love To Boogie by T Rex – it’s difficult to listen to that without getting up and joining in.
I know, Judy, I’m hearing it now and can feel and see the movements xx
Thanks, Tracey, for taking the time to reply AND that’s what it’s all about = releasing those endorphins when we don’t even realise that’s what we’re doing – also called ‘having fun’ xx
