Woman on BeachWhether you like it or not, where you came from (your roots) is what’s made you.  You’ve learnt from your family, your schooling, your environment.  And what you’ve learned has empowered and made you believe in yourself, or has caused you to be held back or harmed in some way.

You may have heard, “You’re not good enough”, “not worthy enough”, “you’ll never succeed so what’s the point of trying?” or “The world is a frightening place”.  Or else you heard “You can do it”, “You’ve got what it takes”, “You’re loved whether you pass or fail”, and “Go for it, the world is your oyster”.

The past shaped you, but you have a choice in what you tell yourself now – this minute.  Remember you’re driven by love and fear so now is the time to let go of bad mouthing yourself.  It’s the time to replace those voices with inspiring and positive thoughts, re-frame them.

This is especially important for women when you think about ageing.  It can bring up lots of fears for those over the mid-life mark. You can also get discouraged and overwhelmed by how the media portrays the ageing process.

For me, the way to deal with this and the feelings that can arise, is to acknowledge the reality – the lines, the body sagging, more need for rest and relaxation, the chicken neck … and then get on with it!

You have to take charge of your health and well being by exercise, dressing for your body shape, watching what you put in your body.  And, most importantly, keeping your spirit young.

I talk about all of this in my book, ‘The Visible Woman’ as it’s so important that we don’t allow ourselves to become invisible to the world.  So get back to your own values, trust in yourself and don’t allow the media (and yourself) pull you down.
