Supervision

I know there are many different definitions of Supervision and a very simple one I like is – ‘to look above and beyond in a benevolent way’.

I am talking here on Supervision that can be for coaches, therapists, leaders, management (all levels) ……. and creativity is always needed in the list of qualities required which include creating trust, experience, professional ability, the ‘how to’, resilience and knowledge of oneself.

I also hold the belief that it is a reflective space for you to share openly any difficulties, celebrations, learnings or questions that you may have.

Hornet’s Nest

Now, I know I am opening up a hornet’s nest here and I am still going ahead because it is important for me to do so!!

There are 1,000s (even more) of Coaches and Therapists (of all different varieties) and I am wondering just how many have Supervision.   Yes, I know, as always there will be those who do and those who don’t and I still consider it an important area to bring out.

Oh, and by the way, my hands are up to owning that I have a vested interest as I am a Supervisor of many years standing who has also co-designed and run three Trainings for those who wished to become Supervisors.    These trainings were in the U.K. and also in Sweden.

Codes of Ethics

Unfortunately, over my long experience, I don’t hear so many Coaches talking about having supervision and abiding by their Codes of Ethics, and I will be going into this in more depth in a future blog.

Your own support?

You see, my concern is not purely on a regulatory issue, it is also about that we, as Coaches, Mentors, Therapists………….. need to have support for ourselves in order to be supportive of our own clients.

Overwhelm can easily happen in all the strands of the ‘Helping Profession’ and can lead to burn-out so it is important that you have someone who will mirror this back to you by challenging you on the affect this work is having on you.

You and I both know that there is a lot of stress around and so when our clients, and their clients, share, our inner resources can be sapped and even our own resilience when we face a build up of such pressure.     Self-care is paramount.

Awareness

I don’t think I am saying anything you wouldn’t know yourself and it is that the awareness of yourself is at the heart of all coaching supervision (as well as coaching) so that means (as in Johari’s window) that we need our unawareness pointed out to us.   This enables us to expand our self-awareness and thus allows us to ‘be with’ the other.

Coming from many years of experience, I know that (whether the other is aware of it or not) my presence, whether overt or subtle, is the key to the work done together whatever their background is.    Again that is why we need to take care of ourselves too.

I will close today with – in my opinion, supervision is about supporting you to ‘be the best you can be’ as a coach (and also as a human being) as well as being a vital element of your ongoing professional development.
