What does ‘coming home to yourself’ mean for you?

I would love to hear from you about your reactions to my title as for some it could be profound, a nod of the head and for others non-understanding and anything in between – so there could be a wide range of response.

As most of you know, nowadays I’ve chosen to focus my work with women and, over this time, I have found that whatever the presenting issue they bring, there is pain underlying it as they are searching for themselves.  They want to re-connect with themselves again as they somehow feel they have lost themselves.

How might this have happened?

You may be one of those women juggling too many balls (or even too little) who gave so much of yourself to your family, your friends, a cause or your career that you lost sight of who you are.   By the way, I am not saying that this doesn’t happen to men too!     I am choosing to focus on what I’ve found in my work with women though.

Lost touch with yourself and your dreams

You’re out of touch with yourself and your dreams.   You have been left with a nagging feeling that just won’t go away despite everything you try including –

  • An extra glass or four of wine
  • Maybe an affair or two
  • Over-eating
  • Shopping for the sake of it
  • Being the life and soul of the party
  • Being busy for busy’s sake
  • Volunteering for all and sundry
  • Be argumentative
  • Keep re-decorating the kitchen/bathroom/whatever when it doesn’t need it

Soul crying out for some attention

Just take a moment or two with a couple of deep breaths, and then see what it’d be like to connect with that sense of emptiness nagging away at you.   It is important for your sake that you do, as it’s your Soul crying out for some attention.

Some of you may or may not be able to do it as it’s too painful right now.   For others, it may be that you are able to face yourself and deal with whatever comes up.    A safer way might be to simply do free writing and then let go by writing about anything you experienced.    Or you could breathe into peace and breathe out fear and then allow yourself to be at peace with yourself – even if it’s only for a few moments – while you re-connect with your dreams.

Aligned with Self

For me, it is when I am aligned with myself that I am able to get in touch with what I’ve been running away from.   Some of you might have said (or are saying),  ‘One day, I will connect with me/my dreams again……..when the kids are grown up, leave home or when I leave my job or move to another house or some such thing’ and then that one day somehow just doesn’t come.

Making other plans

I have on the back of my business Card – “Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans” (John Lennon) and have experienced this myself.    I, therefore, want to say – stop wasting your time and energy on the people and things that don’t make you feel good and start re-connecting with what makes your heart sing – you being aligned with yourself.    Yes, I know some of you will worry about what others might say or think about you, and I’m suggesting that yes, include those feelings in and then you shrug your shoulders and simply carry on being you.

The bottom line is that your own opinion of you is what matters.  And valuing and respecting yourself are two of the most impactful things you can do.

Enjoy re-connecting with the feeling of coming home to yourself.

  • Beautiful! Just over a year ago my soul was crying out for me to dance. I knew if I kept waiting for my husband to bring me dancing I would be old and grey and probably unable to do so. Now I go Salsa dancing every Thursday night and it literally makes my soul sing. It’s taking that time to listen to the little voice inside that says “just do it”….

  • I love your response as it shows others that we don’t have to sit and wait for another, we do it for ourselves and let our Soul be free – thank you Ber xx

  • I find that when I allow myself to be in full alignment I am at my most powerful, however as… “life” has a habit of happening it’s not always easy to do. Listening to music, moving or getting lost in mind numbing activities often, amazingly, helps to let everything fall back into place. 🙂
