Loose, high-level objectives

I read in a magazine that your brain will see a challenging situation more as a motivator than stressful when you can find meaning in the effort that’s required to do it.

Maybe you don’t agree with this and yet, I have to say, I do.

Most of us know by now that doing what we’ve always been doing won’t bring about the changes we want in our lives – particularly when that voice inside us is screaming, ‘there has to be more than this’!!

It definitely takes courage when you have to make those big choices in life and yet, what about all those seemingly little choices you have to make – Do I attend or not? Do I make that phone call or not?  Do I speak out or stay silent?  Do I say Yes or do I say No?   Depending on the context, these personal decisions can be so difficult for most of us.

Choice

Most of us, when we have to make a choice, accept that the decision outcome will be a right one or a wrong one or even a slow burning one.   It is only when we beat ourselves up afterwards if it turns out to be a so-called wrong one that we do ourselves a big disservice.

Life is all about taking responsibility for our choice and this is a difficult one to do as it is always better to be able to blame someone else – ‘they made me do it!!   It is all their fault’.

It takes courage to hold your hands up and say, ‘mea culpa’, and then move to a place where you can pat yourself on the back, be nice to yourself and say ’well done for having the confidence to make the choice in the first place.  Let’s see what the next step is now’.

Motivation

Let’s return to the motivation rather than a source of stress when you are faced with a challenge you feel you’ve no choice in.

Very simply – is your choice going to take you towards your end result, however small or large, or is it going to take you away from it??

Is the facing of your fear of asking for ……………….whatever and being turned down, more than what it is that is calling you inside to do?

What is it in you that motivates you?    Is it fame, fortune, showing the world what you have to offer, getting healthy, any of these and more?

Old Story

I always remembered this story when I was studying and am pleased to be able to bring it in here –

“An old story tells of a visitor who encounters three stonemasons working on a mediaeval cathedral, and asks each what he is doing.

“I am cutting this stone to shape,” says the first, describing his basic actions.

“I am building a great cathedral,” says the second, describing his intermediate goal.

“And I am working for the glory of God,” says the third, describing his high-level objective.

And, of course, all of them were right, just as each of us is right in whatever motivates us.

You could say that each of us has loose, high-level objectives somewhere in amongst simply doing our job and earning money which may be to make the world a better place for our children, future generations, leave a legacy behind – only you will know what it is.

So whatever is our motivation e.g. building a cathedral, we can realise this by taking action e.g. cutting the stone, and we do this by first having a vision and choosing to bring this into life and it may never be finished in our life-time!!

I’d love to hear what motivates you these days so please let me know.

  • Hello Irene
I think we are in synch at the moment.
Just spent the weekend exploring my main
goal and asked myself – Why do I want this
and what will it give me?
Hope all is well with you.
    Love Cathy
